A list of the finest schools in the country wouldn’t be complete without the San Beda College. The school gained such reputation due to the quality of graduates they produce as well as in sports, like basketball. Many of their alumni have made a name in different sectors, especially in politics.

San Beda College is a Roman Catholic Benedictine college located in Manila for its college department and Taytay for elementary and high school departments. The school was founded in 1901 and initially known as the El Colegio de San Beda which was an all boys school. It was able to expand to offer full college education offering undergraduate and post-graduate degrees.

The Manila campus is located in the bustling area called the University Belt.

San Beda college offers programs in different fields such as: accountancy, marketing, business, economics and law.

There are currently seven departments in the Benedictine College: Basic Education, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Law, Graduate Schools of Business, Liturgy and Law, College of Nursing and College of Medicine.

The College of Arts and Sciences offers sciences, liberal arts and business programs. The College of Law on the other hand was founded in 1948.

It was in 2003 when San Beda formally opened its doors to female students. This move prompted the decision to move the Basic Education Department to its Taytay, Rizal campus.


San Beda is one of the founding members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association where it participates in the taekwondo, lawn tennis, swimming, football and basketball competitions. It is also a founding member of the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities.

Notable Alumni

There are different personalities in the Philippines who graduated from San Beda, among them is the late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. who is considered a hero in the country. The late Senator Raul Roco, former speaker Ramon V. Mitra and former Senator Rene V. Saguisag are also notable alumni who carved names in the political scene. San Miguel Corporation’s Chairman, Ambassador Eduardo Cojuangco Jr., PLDT Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan are popular in the business scene. Among the notable alumni who are practicing careers in the legal profession are Associate Justices Jose Catral Mendoza and Antonio Eduardo B. Nachura. Justice Secretary Leila De Lima also graduated from San Beda.
