The Manila Hotel is the oldest of the premiere hotels in the country. The hotel houses several offices of foreign news organizations including the coveted The New York Times. It served as the house of important world historical personalities and personalities.

The Manila Hotel is a grand structure that features 570-rooms overlooking the Manila Bay area in the country’s capital. The hotel is the oldest of the premiere hotels in the country. It was built in 1909 setting as a rival for the Malacanang Palace, the official residence of the Philippines’ president. The hotel was opened on July 4, 1912, in time for the commemoration of the American Independence.

The hotel stands on a reclaimed lot in the Manila Bay area. It covers about 35,000 square meters at the northwestern end of Rizal Park. The penthouse of the hotel served as the residence of General Douglas MacArthur when he served as the Military Advisor of the Philippine Commonwealth from 1935 to 1941.

The hotel also houses several offices of foreign news organizations including the coveted The New York Times. It served as the house of important world historical personalities and personalities such as authors James A Michener and Ernest Hemingway; actors, John Wayne and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.; entertainers The Beatles, Michael Jackson and Sammy Davis Jr.; publisher Henry Luce and world leaders such as US President John F. Kennedy and Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden.

In 1977, the hotel tower was built thus it was able to surpass the Philippine Plaza Hotel, now known as Sofitel Philippine Plaza. It remains the tallest hotel tower in the Manila Bay area.

The Manila Hotel features the three-bedroom MacArthur suite which was the residence of General MacArthur when he stayed in the country. The suite is at the 5th floor of the hotel’s original structure.
The Penthouse, the hotel’s most expensive suite has its own private swimming pool on the 18th floor. It also offers a spectacular view of the Manila Bay, 16th-century Spanish walled city of Intramuros and the Rizal Park. The penthouse is also decorated with rare paintings, Filipino crafts and Asian antiques. The Presidential suite is also adorned with such rare art pieces. The Penthouse, MacArthur and Presidential suites are provided with 24-hour butler service.


The 38 meter long and 7.6 meter wide lobby is lined with immaculate white Doric columns. Philippine marble is used for the flooring while brass, crystal and seashell chandeliers are hanging from the ceiling. The lobby also features the best of the Philippine’s carved furniture as it showcases mahogany-made carved furniture.
